How green is my base station?
Carbon neutral? Pah! Old school. Nokia Siemens Networks is now going for a “net positive” environmental effect.
Greenbang reckons the company’s staff must all dress in emo clothing and surf web 2.0 sites on their iPhones, they’re that cutting edge.
It’s going all energy efficient in its base stations and IT Wire tells us:
“NSN argues that advanced wireless and wireline communication technology can play a significant role in creating a sustainable future by reducing adverse environmental impacts while increasing opportunities for economic welfare and growth. It says its goal is “to connect the world in a way that creates a net positive impact to the environment by maximising the benefits telecommunications can bring to people and businesses, while minimising the environmental footprint of its products and operations.”
All very laudable. But if you’re the type of person with an interest in base stations and environment - as Greenbang very much is - then there’s more going on than you can shake a stick at.
Greenbang’s favourite ones are Motorola’s solar and wind powered base stations, for areas that are remote enough to be off the electricity grid. Ericsson even has a biodiesel base station, although you’ll have to wander over to Nigeria to see it in action.
