Toshiba to build pilot carbon capture plant
Toshiba is to build a pilot carbon capture and storage (CCS) plant in Japan to test and validate its latest R&D into separation and capture technologies.
Construction of the plant, at Sigma Power Ariake’s Mikawa power plant in Omuta City, is due to begin in spring next year, with testing to begin in August.
The Mikawa pilot plant will capture 10 tons of CO2 a day from the boiler flue of the coal fired thermal power plant. Toshiba will use an amine solvent it has developed, which consumes minimal energy during CO2 separation and capture.
The project will use a wide range of tests, including the effects of the thermal power plant flue gas contents such as sulphur oxide on the operation of the system when integrated with other equipment such as turbines and boilers.
