Automated energy management comes to Times Square hotel

A Wisconsin-based energy management technology company is helping a large hotel in New York City’s Time Square boost its green cred with the help of a system to help automatically reduce power use and costs.
Telkonet will deploy its EcoSmart energy management platform at the city’s Crowne Plaza Times Square Manhattan, a 770-room hotel on Broadway. The decision followed a test deployment in which the system was used to automatically adjust temperatures to maximize efficient energy use when rooms were not in use.
“We received very positive feedback about the Telkonet technology from the guests who stayed in the test rooms and we’re anxious to get the system installed before the holiday season,” said Stephen Pletcher, asset manager for the hotel’s owner, City Investment Group LLC.
The energy management system is expected to reduce overall electricity and steam consumption by around 25 percent in unoccupied rooms. By reducing equipment run-times, the technology is also expected to extend the useful life of mechanical systems and cut associated maintenance costs.
The Telkonet deployment will replace the hotel’s existing thermostats with wirelessly networked thermostats to enable a system that can remotely monitor and control the heating, ventilation and air-conditioning (HVAC) system in each guest room.
Telkonet worked on the project with PAC Consultants to take advantage of energy efficiency incentives available through the Con Edison C&I Energy Efficiency Program, with the goal of optimizing the financial viability of the project.
“We wanted the functionality of the system we selected to be similar to what many of our guests are likely to have in their own homes — legible displays, easy-to-understand controls, simple and clean functionality — all in addition to the substantial financial returns we expect from the Telkonet system,” said Pletcher.
“Management will have full control of the hotel’s energy usage and now can easily shed power during a demand response request from
the local utility,” said Pat Communale from PAC Consultants.
