Clean coal technology could bring between £2 billion to £4 billion a year into the UK economy by 2030, as well as support between 30,000 to 60,000 in jobs like engineering, manufacturing and procurement, according to new research published today.
The AEA Group report, “Future Value Of Coal Carbon Abatement Technologies To UK Industry,” was published alongside the Government’s consultation document, “A framework for the development of clean coal.”
The consultation details how the Government proposes to reconcile the need to curb emissions of carbon from future coal fired power stations with the need to maintain a secure diverse energy mix. It proposes:
“The conditions we’re proposing for new coal are the most environmentally ambitious of any country in the world, requiring the demonstration of CCS on a substantial proportion of any new power station and the 100-per cent retrofit of CCS when it’s proven,” said Energy and Climate Change Secretary Ed Miliband. “At the same time, by providing funding for demonstrations, we can maintain coal as part of our energy mix, supporting diversity and therefore security of supply.”
He added, “By acting early, jobs will also be created as Britain develops the expertise in what could be a major new industry, with CCS projects offering the potential to form the hubs for clusters of low carbon industries. By driving the development of CCS in this country, we are also, as a country, playing an essential role in the battle against climate change.”
Coal currently accounts for 37 per cent (29 gigawatts) of the UK’s electricity capacity, generating 31 per cent of the UK’s electricity in 2008.

This same success can be achieved in our country (United States) . We at CBA/USEP have developed a clean coal technology that reduces and or eliminates harmful chemicals and combustibles such as arsenic, chlorine, mercury, and sulfur. . We at CBA/USEP, have developed a clean coal technology that lowers the levels of these dangerous chemicals and other pathogens(nitrogen oxide, sulfur dioxide) anywhere from 20%-100% while still increasing BTU value by 50%. This will aid in creating a healthier and safer environment if power plants use our process to clean their coal. I have attached a link to the bottom of this comment that will take you to a youtube video where you can see our process in action. Along with the overall improvement of the environment, our clean coal processes would help in creating over 250,000 jobs and greatly aid to a depleting economy and workforce. CBA/USEP has also used its own resources to create this process. Although many large power companies have expressed great interest, we have yet to receive funding. Clean coal is a reality, and we invite any doubters to see our process for themselves. This is a world revolutionizing technology and one that the world must recognize.
