Energy-hungry military explores smart-grid innovation

Energy managers and other officials from the US military’s Joint Base San Antonio (JBSA) plan to review smart-grid technology innovations and other developments in energy management during a July 12 workshop in San Antonio.
The JBSA Sustainable Energy Workshop 2011 is being organized by the JBSA and the Defense Transformation Institute (DTI).
The one-day workshop will explore JBSA requirements and initiatives in energy management and control systems, and will also feature presentations by the Texas Engineering Experiment Station and the University of Texas-San Antonio on smart-grid research-and-development . Speakers are also set to attend from Siemens, Schneider Electric, AECOM and the Southwest Research Institute, among others.
JBSA, an organization led by the US Air Force, supports more personnel than any other installation in the Department of Defense, and is one of the department’s largest energy users. It is also the biggest customer of CPS Energy, the largest municipally owned utility in the US.
