IBM has joined a Danish consortium working to develop an intelligent infrastructure for large-scale adoption of sustainably powered electric vehicles.

Other firms participating in the EDISON effort (for “Electric Vehicles in a Distributed and Integrated Market using Sustainable Energy and Open Networks”) include Denmark’s DONG Energy, the regional energy company of Oestkraft, Technical University of Denmark, Siemens, Eurisco and the Danish Energy Association.

The EDISON project is being partly funded by the Danish government.

The project will first roll out smart technology testing on Bornholm, a 40,000-resident Danish island that’s already powered in large part by wind energy.

Also today, IBM’s Global Business Services release a new report titled “Lighting the Way: Understanding the Smart Energy Consumer.” The study finds that 18- to 34-year-olds are most eager for the types of self-service and automated energy management that smart grids can support.

The report also states that the under-25 set is most willing to pay a premium for such services.
