Itron to roll out 250,000 water meters in Delhi

A rollout of smarter water meters is aimed at reducing waste in Delhi, the second-largest city in India.
Working with Larsen & Toubro — India’s largest construction firm — metering company Itron plans to provide 250,000 residential water meters as part of an infrastructure upgrade project by the Delhi Jal Board (DJB). The contract for the project, set to take 18 months to complete, is Itron’s largest yet in India.
Responsible for the delivery and distribution of drinking water in the region, the DJB oversees approximately 1.9 million connections in Delhi. Historically, customers have been charged for water service on an estimated average basis, not on actual consumption. In addition, over 60 percent of water connections are either unmetered or have defective meters installed, resulting in tremendous water waste across the metropolitan area.
Itron has already delivered 100,000 advanced water meters to DJB as part of an earlier project. Meters for the new project are set to be assembled at Itron’s factory in Dehradun, India.
