Nottingham ventures up for new tech transfer awards

By Greenbang on Tuesday, 2nd June 2009

green-pcbTwo commercial projects based on research at The University of Nottingham have been shortlisted for international awards for innovation.

The projects — “Promethean Particles Ltd.: Formulating solutions with nanomaterials” and “Microwave exfoliation of vermiculite” — made the shortlist of 14 from more than 70 entries into Unico’s new Impact Awards, established to “recognise and celebrate the success of technology transfer.”

The award winners are set to be announced on 11 June.

“Promethean Particles,” a recent spin-out nominated in Unico’s “Business Impact” category, was established to exploit unique nanoparticle production technology. Inorganic nanoparticles are used in diverse fields such as electronics, cosmetics, biomedical, energy and optoelectronics. During the first year of operation, Promethean Particles has successfully worked with global corporations based in the US, UK and Japan. Initial orders have enabled staffing to grow and are expected to help drive future growth.

“Microwave exfoliation of vermiculite, a finalist in Unico’s “Environmental Impact” category, features a new microwave processing method that significantly reduces the amount of energy needed to produce vermiculite, used in the fireproofing and horticultural markets. The innovative process also reduces dust creation and the environmental footprint.
