Outrage over plan to build nuke plant on wind farm

By Greenbang on Wednesday, 29th April 2009

single-turbineA plan to replace a long-time British wind farm with a new nuclear plant is eliciting loud protests from the public, according to The Guardian.

The German energy firm RWE has proposed building a nuclear power station at a site in Cumbria that’s currently home to Windcluster’s Haverigg wind farm. Just the second commercial wind energy operation in the UK, Haverigg began operations in 1992.

An official with RWE said it wasn’t yet certain whether all or some of the existing wind turbines would need to be moved from the site to clear way for the nuclear plant. The spokesperson further noted that a nuclear facility could provide more than 1,000 times as much energy as the wind farm, and that RWE also invests in wind power.
