Philips unveils new solid-state lights

By Greenbang on Thursday, 23rd April 2009

philips-oledRoyal Philips Electronics today launched what it’s calling the “world’s first OLED (for “organic light-emitting diodes”)-based interactive lighting concept.”

On display at the Eurluce International Lighting Fair in Milan, the OLEDs offer ultra-flat shapes, soft lighting and myriad design possibilities, according to Philips.

“In addition to our expertise in LEDs, we are now unlocking the great potential of flat, energy-efficient OLEDs,” said Rudy Provoost, CEO of Philips Lighting. “Our concepts demonstrate a new light ambiance, novel design possibilities and unique interactivity of light and human gesture.”

The OLEDs are available in four options for homes: standing, wall-mounted, desktop and ceiling luminaires. Another style is designed specifically for large spaces in business settings.

“The global lighting industry is in a state of great transition,” Provoost said. “Economic and environmental concerns are driving all of us to make the move from incandescent lamps to cleaner, more energy-efficient solutions as quickly as we can. The solid-state lighting revolution is happening at the right time. What’s particularly exciting is that LEDs and OLEDs offer the possibility to create new lighting designs and experiences that weren’t achievable in the past.”
