Solar firm BrightSource Energy expands management team

Published Tuesday, 16th August 2011

Solar thermal power technology company BrightSource Energy has added three new energy sector veterans to its management team.

They include Joe Desmond, senior vice president of government affairs and communications; Stephen Wiley, senior vice president of US development; and Yasser Dib, regional vice president of international business development. All three positions are effective immediately.

“By adding Joe, Stephen and Yasser to our world-class management team, we’re gaining decades of private and public sector energy industry experience,” said John Woolard, BrightSource Energy’s president and CEO.

Prior to joining BrightSource, Desmond served as executive vice president and chief marketing & business development officer at Ice Energy, and as senior vice president of external affairs at NorthernStar Natural Gas. Desmond also served numerous executive roles under California Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger including Deputy Secretary of Energy for the State Resources Agency, Chairman of the California Energy Commission and Undersecretary for Energy Affairs.

As the lead on all US development activities, Wiley will manage the site selection, permitting, development and delivery of utility-scale solar power projects. He previously served as president at Gallop Power LLC and president at Greenhunter Renewable Energy. Wiley has also held management roles at Gamesa Energy, TIP Strategies, Reliant Energy and Dynegy, and worked for the Public Utility Commission of Texas.

Dib is responsible for developing industrial and enhanced oil recovery markets for BrightSource. Prior to joining BrightSource, he served as chief investment officer at Amwal International Investment Company, where he oversaw the company’s investment group and the development of a 350-megawatt power plant in Pakistan. He has also served as chief investment officer at Al Ritaj Investment Company, and has held senior management positions at Alghanim Industries, DIB S.A.R.L., Bechtel Financing Services and Bechtel Corporation.

BrightSource Energy designs, develops and sells solar thermal power systems that deliver energy to utilities and industrial companies. It has so far contracted to sell approximately 2.6 gigawatts of power to be generated using its proprietary solar thermal technology.
