Greenbang loves marathons, where else can you see runners at the pinnacle of fitness, such determination in people’s eyes, the joggers of hitting the wall after 21 miles, oh and Big Brother (former) star Jade Goody saying, “I don’t really understand miles. I didn’t actually know how far it was going to be.”

And so naturally Greenbang’s getting excited about October when the third annual ALD Automotive/Total Excellium MPG Marathon comes to Bristol. The event organisers are looking for more than 30 competitors, with as many types of car as possible, to compete in the 350 mile race between Fishponds, the home of Little Britain’s Vicky Pollard, and Maccelsfield in Cheshire.

The race is using a new route but, according to the organisers, “there will be no change in direction for the event message – educating drivers about getting the most from their motors while ‘cutting the carbs’ that are linked to climate change.”

In 2007 driver Richard Hill’s Toyota Aygo completed the Basingstoke to Torquay route using just 19.12 litres of petrol to return an MPG of 78.39. To help break this an Eco driver training course will be run in advance.

The event takes effort, determination and a dogged will to succeed. For those that didn’t see Jeremy Clarkson do 800 miles on a single tank of diesel, the Top Gear episode is, currently at least, on Google Videos.
