British electric bike specialist 50cycles sent a team to compete in the world’s first 24-hour electric dirt bike endurance race in California this past weekend. The team was the only UK participant in the Zero Motorcycle Electricross race, which drew 10 other teams from across North America.

The 50cycles team included founding brothers Scott and Tim Snaith plus Lloyd Clarkson, the firm’s sales manager and “all-round Eco Knievel.” While in California, the team also met the people behind Zero Motorcycles, the California manufacturer that built their bike and sponsored the 24-hour Electricross event.

One of the most popular bikes participating was Zero’s own ‘X’ – a 68-kilogram motocrosser that costs $7,450 (US). The 50cycles team plans to bring a model back to the UK for demos and test rides this spring.

While it’s more expensive that your average petrol-powered bike, the Zero X requires virtually no servicing and is practically silent, which addresses a common complaint people have about dirt bikes.
