Coca-Cola reduce CO2 emissions with new bottle design
Drinks company Coca-Cola is updating its glass bottle… again. It has reduced the weight of its glass ‘contour’ bottles by 20% its latest eco-friendly move.
The change will affect Coca-Cola, Diet Coke and Coke Zero glass bottles, taking their weights down from 263g to 210g. The company has estimated it will cut it’s raw glass usage by 3,500 tonnes and its CO2 emissions by 2,200 tonnes annually.
Coca-Cola supply chain project manager Gareth Snowdon said
“We are so committed that we’re even adapting our most precious asset, the glass Coca-Cola contour bottle. Technology has helped us improve on one of the world’s greatest designs, allowing us to keep its hourglass figure whilst significantly reducing its weight.”
The change follows their updated 20-ounce PET (polyethylene terephthalate) bottle for all of its brands in September which are completely recyclable and used 5% less PET than its predecessor.
The company are also amid a $60 million scheme to build the world’s largest plastic-bottle-to-bottle recycling plant to support recycling in the US.
