Global warming will threaten China’s food security

CHINA WATCH China’s grain harvest is likely to fall by 5-10% because of global warming–meaning it will need an additional 10 million hectares of arable land to feed its increasing number of people by 2030, according to a top climate official in Chinadaily.

Climate change will cause both corn and rice production to fall, but on the flip side it could have little impact–and maybe even help–wheat production in some areas.

Officials also reckon global warming will cause the country’s forest resources to shift northward and trees will grow at higher altitudes, which might increase the country’s forest products (although we’re guessing other parts of the country will still be trying to ward off desertification).
