Plastic bags to help recycle steel
Plastic bags aren’t just for decorating canals and keeping away from children, you know. They can also be used for recycling steel.
Aussie scientists have come up with a way of using the transparent annoyances to replace coke and coal in steelmaking.
From an article in The Age here:
“Plastic is simply another form of carbon,” UNSW materials scientist Professor Veena Sahajwalla said.
“In making steel there’s essentially no difference between the polyethylene plastic in shopping bags, soft packaging and some drink containers, and a natural resource like coal.”
