Silicon Valley will miss carbon reduction goals

Silicon Valley, home of countless tech innovations and breakthroughs, looks set to fail
on its next big task: hitting its carbon emission reduction goals of 20% below 1990 levels by 2010.

The goal was always ambitious, requiring bigger cuts on a shorter time frame than the rest of the region — but if any one place on earth could engineer a solution, where better than the Valley? But no, it ain’t happening so far:

In fact, a report to be released by the group today says that carbon dioxide emissions in Silicon Valley in 2006 were 5.6 percent above 1990 levels, not 20 percent below them.

Cumulatively, according to the report, Sustainable Silicon Valley members reduced carbon-dioxide emissions by 517,000 tons since 1990. That’s the equivalent of taking 102,000 cars off the road for a year.
