Sustainability comes to stay at hotel
Check out this hotel in the UK’s County Durham – it’s really making an effort to boost its eco credentials.
As well as doing the usual – energy-saving lightbulbs and getting guests to reuse towels, these guys are going a bit further.
“It’s the little things that we can all do that really make a difference,” said the hotel’s manager Paul Mandeir.
“We invited the Carbon Trust to come and audit the hotel and they advised us to introduce card board recycling which has made a vast difference. The card board is compressed and then picked up rather than being thrown away helping to reduce unnecessary waste.”
The County Durham hotel has joined forces with the environmental group, Hospitable Climates, which is working with the Government to reduce emissions of carbon dioxide into the atmosphere and reduce the
contribution the hospitality industry makes to global warming.
An Energy Saving Committee meets once a month to check on progress and introduce new measures to help the environment. And an Environmental Policy Statement has been drafted and is on display in all conference rooms.
